Positive Review
I have owned this truck since 2002. Overall, very reliable thru the years and still runs great. My only beef is with the rust issue with GMC and Chevy trucks of this era. 99% of the trucks I see have the rust problem over the rear wheel wells and along the running boards under the doors.
Critical Review
I have had to replace the steering shaft at 20000 miles and again at 69000 miles. The a/c fan went out at 65000 miles and cost nearly $500.00 to replace. Lights on the steering wheel and dash have gone out and according to the GMC dealer where I bought the truck, they cannot be replaced. A completely new dash panel and steering wheel must be replaced to fix it. The seats are not comfortable and do not lean back enough to relax when driving long distances. The front speakers went out at 40000 miles. As far as the drive goes, I like the ride. It is smooth and steers great. Overall, I would not recommend anyone buying this vehicle.

I paid cash for my silver birch metallic 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Z71 crew cab in February 2025 with 94k original miles. 5.3L Vortec, Z71 offroad package, Z82 towing package, G80 locker, 3.73 gear ratio, heated leather seats, Bose sound system, Line-X spray-in bedliner, push-button 4x4, etc...all the good stuff. No rust on the body of the truck (rare in my area!) and typical surface rust on the frame. Truck was purchased at a small local dealership with a valid state inspection certificate. Absolutely love the truck. It's smooth, powerful, quiet, mechanically sound and fun to drive. Yeah, it's not perfect. I've had to put some money into it (air conditioning, tune-up, cosmetic stuff, etc.) to keep it performing at it's best and will continue to (driver seat repairs, shuddering 4L60E transmission with cruise control engaged, etc.)...but it's still way better than a $600+/monthly truck payment. In fact, I've been driving for 20 years and have never made a monthly payment on a vehicle before. I've had 3 GMT400s, which I liked, but this GMT800 is, objectively speaking, a better truck. Let's see if it can last another 22 years!
372,000...miles.I bought a gmc 1500 ext cab. $1400. Runs great. It had some dents I took care of. Michelin tires around. I gave it a tune up. A fuel pump. Someone took the time to service it. It runs beautifully. Doesn't smoke. Passed smog. 372,000 miles
15 mph
It's a beautiful totally fabulous truck. 1500 HD SLT. Original cost $38,000 in 2002. I've towed my boat with ease for 24 years and my brake linings still have 50% left. Brakes have not been replaced. Unreal. Boat and trailer is at least 4500 lbs unloaded. The comfort is exquisit. At 110,000 miles, I replaced the alternator in 1 hour max, easy. Every possible accutrament within works like new. Just blown away after 23 years how new it looks and inside leather comfort is like new. I'm having the small dings removed, replacing the shadowed lights and making it look new. So easy. I love this truck!

Great Truck. You can't ask for a better motor. The frame of the truck is great and rides well. The LB7 Duramax is the best
