Review Summary

AI summary of user-generated reviews for this vehicle
The reviews on this compact SUV provide a mixed perspective. Positive aspects include a smooth ride, good fuel efficiency, and a spacious interior. However, many customers have experienced significant issues with the transmission, including jerking, hesitation, and stalling. The transmission problems appear to be the main weakness of the vehicle, with some reviewers stating they would not recommend it due to these unresolved issues. Overall, the SUV seems decent, but the transmission concerns may deter some buyers.

"Close second to my Audi Q5!"

Just sold my Audi Q5 as the repairs were astronomically expensive. Since its made by the same company, I thought maybe the Taus would be a close second at half the price. I was right! I'm loving this car. I got the SEL with leather and tons of safety features - well worth the cost. It handles just as well as my Q5. Acceleration is good, not quite a good as my Q5, but definitely better than similar vehicles I drove before deciding on the Taus. It's really fun to drive, takes corners so well, and U-turns are a breeze. The advertised mileage is really accurate - I'm getting 28 around town and 34 on the highway (if I slowed down I'm sure I would be 36 - 38). Very happy with my purchase!

"Nothing but issues"

Leased the car just over a year ago as of this review. Initially all was amazing preppy little car great features for the price then the issues started, first the rear brakes failed, next a fuel issue, multiple check engine lights all culminated with a head gasket failure 14 months 14k miles into ownership. Being the first model year of this car I don’t see it lasting if the issues persist. Dealing with a buyback now as VW corporate says the parts to fix the car are no where in sight.

Bad head gasket

Thankfully covered under warranty, but how the beep does a head gasket go bad with just 22k miles. My 1988 Ford F150 is literally more reliable (still has original engine and transmission) than this 2024 Taos. We did love the car at first. It checked all the boxes in what we were looking for. I was a little hesitant going with a VW in terms of reliably, and I regret not sticking with that hesitancy. I guess I thought that the 2024 would’ve had the kinks worked out.

Great vehicle!

Great mileage: 33mpg with my driving. The height is just right for me. I can sit down in it without falling or climbing into the seat and get out without jumping to the ground. Built in a Jetta frame, it's the perfect size for me. It's the quality I expect from VW. Smooth transition from gear to gear as it accelerates. The ACC is quick to recognize vehicles as it approaches them and adjust speed without running up too close.

Transmission issues

We had this car for a year and a half now. Still in warranty and they replaced the transmission once at 30,000 miles a month later we couldn’t put the car in drive! Eventually pulling the shifter back until it popped something in the transmission. The car will not automatically shift gears and when we park the car it rolls 3 to 4 feet before it stops. They are probably going to need replace the transmission again. Never buying a Volkswagen ever again, First ever VM purchase too. The worst part is we paid it off 4 months ago.

Great car
Pros

tech car, all wheel drive

Cons

wish they had a better dashboard

I had my car for almost a year and it has handled nicely from the hot summer days in the desert and the winter days in sequoia. I haven't had any issues expect for then the entertainment system didn't turn on because it was to cold. After reading the manual, it does state that it can happen but it will turn on after the car warms up, which it did after resetting the entertainment system (just hold down the volume button). I know the transmission was an issue with the 2022 model but it doesn't feel like its an issue with the 2023 model. Overall its a great suv car and it has done everything I thrown at is from road trips and a daily commuter. Please keep in mind that this is a GERMAN engineering car, so if you take care of your car, your car will take care of you.

drives like a sports car
Pros

great gas mileage

Cons

wish the seat would adjust JUST A LITTLE MORE

This vehicle handles really well and drives like it has something to prove while bringing all the gear along. As others have mentioned, the transm can be lurchy but driving in the right mode can lessen that. Amazing gas mileage (45+ in the mountains where I live) with plenty of room for the crew. PHOTOGENIC

Don't buy the 2022 Taos!

Our first new car purchase in 10 years, we are a family of 5 and looked for a sub-compact SUV that was good on gas. Within 2 months, car was at the dealership for engine lights, EPC and a few others. Lights were turned off, came back on 2 days later, back to the dealership two more times for the same issue. Car runs in "safe mode" I was told, start/stop does not work, no acceleration. Dealership said to put different gas in it so I tried them all, premium, regular from 4 different suppliers, no change. It only happens in the hot months in CA and end result was a problem that had no resolution. Fast-forward a year later and it's back, I was told a software update was coming to fix it, never happened. I've never written a review in my life like this but I'm so frustrated, headed back to the shop again for the 4th time. Never mind there's something wrong with the brakes that last 10,000 miles only (rear ones ironically that usually last 25-40k miles), back up camera didn't work....it goes on. So disappointed in this vehicle, so much time, rental cars...don't buy this car or the 2023, read about it, they are cute but horribly unreliable.
